When you bought a new computer, to set up this new computer may be an annoying thing because you have to create the same account as the old one and migrate all the user files. But the toughest is the loss of settings in various applications. So, to avoid these disturbing processes, you have to look for an easier solution. Hence, in this article, I will show you 4 solutions on how to complete this migration task with ease.
Part 1. Can we copy user profile Windows 10 to another computer with Windows Easy Transfer?
As Microsoft stated, Windows Easy Transfer is no longer supported on the latest OS Windows 10. So, it’s unavailable to copy user profile on Windows 10 to another computer with Windows Easy Transfer. However, there still are a great many Windows 7 users, if you’re too, it’s still an effective way to handle this goal. I’ll show you basic introduction to copy Windows 7 user profile to another computer with Windows Easy Transfer.
Note that Windows Easy Transfer is only available on Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 and you’re not allowed to transfer data from 64-bit system to 32-bit system.
On the old computer
Open Windows Start menu and search for Windows Easy Transfer in the quick search box.
Then launch Windows Easy Transfer on the old machine. You can see the main interface of the program shown below:
Click Next and then chose one method for items transfer: An Easy Transfer Cable, A network, or An external hard disk or USB flash drive. If the two computers on the same wireless home network, it’s a good idea to choose network transfer method. In this post, I’ll take network transfer method as an example.
After choosing the network method option, on the old computer choose “This is my old computer” option.
On the next screen, there show the next steps on the new computer and a necessary Windows Easy Transfer key.
On the new computer
Run the Windows Easy Transfer on the new computer and choose “This is my new computer” option.
On the next screen, tell the program whether you installed Easy Transfer or the old PC is running Windows 7 or Windows 8.
In my case, I need to choose “My old PC is running Windows 7 or Windows 8“. Click Next and type the key you get from the old PC.
Then the program will scan the user accounts and data on the old computer and it will take a few minutes depends on the data amount. With it done, there will list all user accounts in the old PC and you can click Customize to choose which data to transfer.
Finally, click Transfer and wait for the transfer process done. With it done, you can see the user profiles are copied to the new computer successfully.
But on a Windows 10 computer, you have to try below methods.
Part 2. Copy user profile from Windows 10 to another computer via Backup and Restore utility
Backup and Restore utility in Windows 10 is an easy to use tool for data or system backup. You can also use it to copy user profile from Windows 10 to another computer.
On the old computer
Right-click on Windows Start menu and choose Settings app. Then choose Update & Security > Backup and click the hyperlinked Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7).
In the pop-up windows, click Set up backup hyperlink.
Go forward to this dialog and choose a drive to save the backup. Then click Next.
In the next screen, select Let me choose and then click Next.
For copying user profiles on Windows 10 to another computer, you can only select user’s libraries items and uncheck System image. Then click Save setting and run backup.
On the new computer
Run Backup and Restore (Windows 7) tool and click Select another backup to restore files from.
Then choose the backup file you create from the old computer and restore it on the new computer.
Part 3. Move Windows 10 user profile to another computer using advanced system properties
Actually, there is another feature on Windows 10 can move user profile to another computer easily.
Just search for advanced system settings in the quick search box.
Then select the item and in the pop-up System Properties dialog, click on Settings button in the User Profiles pane.
In the next dialog, all user profiles will list here and you can select one or all to copy. Then click Copy To button. But be careful sometimes the Copy To button is greyed out. If you encounter this issue, just try next two methods and they are practical totally.
Next step is to choose a location to save the user profile.
